Kid's Chance of Vermont Check

Need help paying your child’s college costs? Kids’ Chance of Vermont awards college scholarships to children of workers injured in Vermont–and the deadline for this year’s scholarship is fast approaching.

Applications for a scholarship for the 2016/2017 school year must be in by April 29. You can get an application form at the BFS front desk or by e-mailing Chris at

In 2015/2016, the first Vermont scholarship recipient, Lindsey Cox, received $10,000 towards her studies in applied biology at The Sage College of Albany, NY.

Lindsey says, “I owe a huge thank you to all of the representatives at the Kids’ Chance organization for presenting me with the inaugural scholarship of the state of Vermont. I received the scholarship as a junior at The Sage College of Albany. As an applied biology student, it really allowed me to further accomplish my dreams and goals towards further study in the medical field. This gift was a great way to be reminded that the goals I wish to accomplish in the medical field are going to be able to happen. The Kids’ Chance scholarship allowed me to continue my education and study to my fullest extent. I will be graduating in May with my Bachelor of Science and I wouldn’t have been able to get here without the Kids’ Chance opportunity.”

Nationwide, Kids’ Chance has helped more than 2,000 people attend college. You can read their stories on the Kids’ Chance web page, Faces of Kids’ Chance. Their hard work and determination to overcome truly tough obstacles that have changed their families is inspiring and BFS is proud to support them.

Our attorney Heidi Groff serves on the board of Kids’ Chance of Vermont (she’s currently Vice President). She says that one of her favorite things about Kids’ Chance of Vermont is that 100% of the money they raise goes towards scholarships, so students get the full benefit of available funds.

Since it was created by a workers’ compensation lawyer in Georgia in 1988, Kids’ Chance has distributed over $5-million in scholarship funds to more than 2,000 recipients. Across the US, 33 states now have their own Kids’ Chance programs.
